Added value for you: International paint ranges
Painting success together
Our slogan “Painting success together” embraces two of our core values, dynamism and trust.
We are proud to be a part of the international Hempel group with its dynamic and visionary Double Impact Strategy.
Trust is in our DNA: for us, as an established family company, it is a symbol of the appreciation that we have for every single employee, customer, supplier and partner.
J.W. Ostendorf is known for its diversity; as the manufacturer of a wide range of paint. As part of the global Hempel family, we can offer you many benefits. Our portfolio contains a variety of brands, which we produce, develop and distribute via various routes to market. You can confidently rely on us to identify and develop the latest trends. We understand your needs as a customer, keep one eye on the development of the market and have outstanding research and development skills that enable us to make our products more sustainable and resource-saving.
At the same time, we are a reliable trade partner. We give large, successful companies the opportunity to develop and sell their own brands. In doing so, we combine the benefits of consultancy and services by offering you customised ranges — with a wide variety of products, product depth and the right marketing concepts. This enables you to enhance your profile as a trade partner and set yourself apart. The advantage for you; you improve your position in the competitive environment and obtain tailor-made solutions for your individual customer portfolio.

Our company history
Achievement of our ambitious goal, to double the Hempel business by the year 2025 (verse 2020). J.W. Ostendorf actively contributes to this by continuously expanding both its brands and own brands and making use of the huge international network of Hempel and our partners.
We have achieved our sustainability goals and are particularly proud of our leading position in this area.
Our sustainable track record in recent years:
- We are a carbon neutral company.
- We have significantly reduced or even eliminated our use of dangerous raw materials in the past 5 years.
- Biocide-free products in all segments.
- Zero landfill waste.
Group-wide launch of the Futureproof concept. Our goal: We intend to achieve CO2-neutral operation by 2025 and support the UN 2019 sustainable development goals. In line with our sustainability strategy, we develop and produce paints without using preservatives and biocides.
J.W. Ostendorf becomes part of the Hempel Group — a global coating solutions company in the decorative coatings, container, industrial, infrastructure, marine, wind and yacht sectors.
Our operational health management scheme JWOAktiv is a winner of the Germany-wide informational competition ‘365 Orte im Land der Ideen’.
We are the home of many brands: Our team produces more than 60 brands in 20 languages, which we distribute from Coesfeld to customers throughout Europe and beyond.
J.W. Ostendorf puts its highly modern goods distribution centre for DIY store logistics into operation — with a capacity of 65,000 pallet bays. Here we pick goods for more than 3,000 specialist and DIY stores.
Since January 2003, J.W. Ostendorf was certified in compliance with the international standard for environmental management systems. In the same year, we became the first paint manufacturer to receive accreditation for our testing laboratory to the particularly strict requirements of DIN EN ISO 17025.
Signs of expansion: J.W. Ostendorf expands the Coesfeld site to 250,000 square metres. Our annual production capacity increases to more than 400 million litres of paint, lacquer and glaze.
The German reunification and increasing demand from other European countries leads to a strong growth spurt: J.W. Ostendorf opens a new emulsion paint plant. With fully automated filling and packing lines featuring robot palletisers, we increase our production capacity to 1,000 tons per day for emulsion products.
J.W. Ostendorf takes on a pioneering role in the development of water-based paint systems. Our speciality: The development of trade brands that allow customers to present themselves and compete in a unique way. The system makes us the market leader in Europe.
The capacity of our city-centre plant is no longer enough for us to handle growing demand. J.W. Ostendorf therefore relocates its production to the 30,000 square metre ‘Rottkamp’ location in the south of the city that still stands today.
Do-it-yourself stores transform the market: J.W. Ostendorf secures its first self-service and cash-and-carry stores as customers in Germany. This change in strategy is the origin of the company philosophy, which still applies today.
Josef W. Ostendorf opens the paint factory in Coesfeld and products emulsion paints, trim and building protection products for the specialist painting trade.
